There is some great history available here and you can’t beat the price. Visiting the Submarine Force Museum in Groton CT USA. Navy torpedoes, a large model of a GATO class submarine, working periscopes that you can look through, deck guns, survival gear and much more. Some the cool exhibits include a Polaris missile, A collection of U.S. 2 underwater collision in the South China Sea, the Navy announced on Thursday. There are some exhibits outside but the day we were there it was uncomfortably hot, so we skimmed that part quickly. The Submarine Force Museum is home to the USS Nautilus and the largest depository of submarine artifacts. Did I mention it is FREE? A person with a strong interest in submarine warfare could probably spend 3-4 hours in the museum but most folks will probably be looking at a 1 – 2-hour visit. While submarine tickets are reasonably priced, a visit to the submarine museum is well worth it for anyone interested in naval history. Even with the absence of that submarine – the museum is still worth visiting. I have toured the Nautilus in the past and wanted to repeat that experience. The Nautilus has been removed for renovation and is scheduled to return in the fall of 2022. Located on the Thames River in Groton, Connecticut. The USS Nautilus was launched into the Thames River, Connecticut, on 21st January 1954 This is how the submarine looks from the outside today. Unfortunately, the USS Nautilus is not currently located at the museum. The Submarine Force Museum is home to the Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear powered vessel. The Connecticut Nautilus Committee was formed in 1984 to raise funds for an improved museum, hoping to convince the Navy to donate the Nautilus. ![]()
